Wartburg 9/23

Coe and Wartburg have a blue, aquatic, ocean-depth rivalry that stems back to even the most ancient of times. Okay, maybe that is a little dramatic, but you get the point....the Kohawks do not like the Knights.
Over the past two years we have had a very unlikely relationship with Wartburg, beating the Knights my freshman year and then losing to them in PK's last year to abruptly end our post season run.
To say the least, playing Wartburg as a Conference opener was not ideal, but also lit a bit of a fire under our booties. With the ring in sight after a successful preseason, facing Wartburg as the start to our journey and season ahead was intimidating, sure, but nothing we couldn't handle.
Overall, the game was evenly matched and well-played by both teams, making each whistle that blew and second that passed more and more intense and passion-filled.
With the Knights one up, Shalyn Kinney came out with an awesome goal to tie the game, putting us back in the same situation as the year prior. Would we avail this time? Yes, I so hoped and believed we would.
After ending the cat's game, we proceeded into overtime where Sydney Schroder shot the ball into the left corner, hitting the side post and bouncing back into the field.
Acknowledging the heartbreak and cries from the sidelines, we pushed through the overtime and ended the first 10 minutes still tied.
We came out ferocious and ready to end the game in the second overtime and while all efforts and attempts were present, we just could not end the game on top.
After concluding yet another match with Wartburg 1-1, I have decided this "let's tie Wartburg and go into double overtime" tradition is not one I want to keep...and I know my teammates feel the same way.
While the disappointment was evident, we still ended the game stronger players and a better team after the 110 minutes of play. We fought hard, worked together, and encouraged each other on the field.
We had grit, passion, and persistence.
We had heart, drive, and desire.
But most of all, we had pride, confidence, and empowerment because at the end of the day, we represented the school we love to the best of our ability...and that's all anyone can really ever ask for.
Sure, this "tradition" of tying Wartburg is tough, but just you wait and see the next time the Knights and Kohawks go head to head. We are ready now more than ever.
