To the freshmen coming into this team...
Nine freshmen. We have nine freshmen coming into our family this year. And how do I feel about these bright, fresh, and radiant 18 year olds taking Coe by storm? Jealous. Absolutely jealous.
Last year, as a sophomore, when our program received a plethora of newbies, my heart didn't stop for one second, I didn't think anything of it, and I didn't have any prominent emotion towards their entry into college.
This year as a junior, however, I have managed to become envious of the little souls entering our team. Not out of hate or meanness, no, never! But because while I am going to be entering my second to last year of school, applying for internships and big girl jobs, and focusing on the rest of my life, these new freshmen will just be embarking on the best adventure of their life: college. More specifically, Coe College.
I cannot even begin to express how fast college flies by. Of course I have been told this statement on approximately 100 different occasions, but you never truly believe it until it happens to you. This feeling of "where the heck is time going!?" dawned on me this summer and it makes me jealous of the youngins who are about to begin the journey I started what seems like yesterday.
So, to the freshmen joining our little soccer family this year, relish in every. single. moment. I mean it. First time doing dishes in your tiny dorm bathroom sink, first time putting on a Kohawk jersey, first time taking a college fitness test. Relish in your first phone call home about how much you love college and Coe, your first phone call home crying because you're homesick, and your first phone call home exclaiming the A you received on your paper.
Relish in those late nights in the library, coffee at 3 a.m., and pizza for breakfast the next day. Relish in Saturday nights out, the TKE basement, and getting dressed up for your first college dance.
Relish in ringing the Victory Bell for the first time, your first game-day jitters, and your first Dougie send-off.
Relish in Sunday morning caf breakfasts, joining different clubs, and receiving your first letter in the mail. Relish in Flunk Day, office hours with your professors, and sharing your roommates' clothes.
Relish in team group chats, college crushes that turn into long-term relationships, freedom, and excitement. Relish in being rebellious, adventurous, and curious. Relish in being hard working, resilient, and passionate. Relish in being challenged, failure, and tears.
Relish in being 100% YOU, but a new and better you in the most positive atmosphere.
I mean it, relish in every. single. second. because trust me, it'll be halfway over...and then done...before you know it.
Ask for help, dive into the traditions, and don't hold back. Take Coe by storm, live each moment as if it were your last, and spend your four years here with a smile on your face. Laugh often, dance in the rain, and sing in the shower. Get to know your professors and the people around you on a deep level.
Of all these things, don't take anything the next four years entails for granted. Appreciate even the small moments.
Although I may be jealous of your grand adventure ahead, I know that two years ago there were people sitting in my same shoes and feeling the same way. Life has chapters and although this chapter of my life is well-written and halfway completed, I cannot wait to help you write the first page of yours. As envious as I am, I am beyond excited to witness you bask in the glory of all things college and all things Coe.
So, my little freshmen, the rest is still unwritten. I love you already.
