Kohawks in the Community
Last Friday, September 23, Kohawk athletes had the opportunity to go to Arthur Elementary, a local school in Cedar Rapids, for its annual Arthur Walk-A-Thon. During this event, Arthur students and faculty walked (or ran, if they were ambitious) a loop around their school for one hour to raise money for a special cause.
Coe athletes attended the event to cheer the runners and walkers on, give high fives, interact with the students, and my favorite part, sign autographs for the little kiddos. The kids truly love seeing college athletes from their community and relish in the chance to talk to us and interact. The Arthur students treat us as if we were professional celebrity athletes, making what we do as student-athletes 10 times more honorable, inspiring, meaningful, and special.
Whether we know it or not, Coe students and athletes impact the community and youth of Cedar Rapids in such a shining light. Though we may sometimes take it for granted, we have a large role in positively influencing the future of our community and have the power to make a difference in several children's lives.
The kids that we met and interacted with look to us for motivation, inspiration, and hope, and I am so blessed to be among the individuals who provided a glimpse of that hope for the students at Arthur.
It is crazy to think that I, a 19 year old stress ball who plays soccer and takes extra bananas from the cafeteria, could be a role model for such a spirited little kid, but I am, and am so proud of it. Who knew I could learn so much depth and insight about life from a human being half my height and 10 years younger?
Here are some pictures from the event. Enjoy!
